Original artwork description
Lirios del Alba (Irises at Dawn) is a delicate, expressive composition in which flowers in violet, magenta and pink emerge from a hazy blue background. The transparency of the watercolour and the loose brushwork create movement, depth and a calm, elegant atmosphere. A piece suited to bedrooms, creative studios or any space that calls for a contemporary floral note.
The crop is so close that the flowers don't fit on the paper: petals enter and leave through all four edges, and there is no stem or vase to place the scene.
The whole piece is played out in the violet range. The irises are built up in layers of mauve, plum and aubergine, each wash left visible through the next, while the leaves come down in olive and emerald greens that keep the purples from going flat. To the right, a deep crimson flower with its stamens drawn in line breaks the symmetry.
Around the flowers runs a halo of unpainted paper that cuts them out against the blue ground. It is reserved white, not added paint, and it is what produces the early-morning light the title refers to.
