Illusion of the Gaze (2026) Original Mixed-media Painting by Anastasiya Kao

Illusion of the Gaze is part of my ongoing series Transparent Borders, exploring identity, perception and personal transformation.

Created from layered glass, mirror and Preciosa crystal components, the artwork examines the invisible masks we wear and the difference between how we are seen by others and how we truly see ourselves. The reflective surfaces constantly change with light and the viewer's position, making the image impossible to perceive in exactly the same way twice.

This work invites the viewer to question first impressions and to reflect on the distance between appearance and reality. It reminds us that our perception is shaped not only by what we see, but also by our own experiences, expectations and emotions.

This is an original, one-of-a-kind artwork, handmade and signed by the artist.
