This is a sculpture of a leaping horse from my series of leaping horses. I made these because I was fascinated by that moment of suspension when a horse leaps off the ground and hangs in the air for an instant as if it is flying. I began thinking about the differing character of those moments, as effected by subtle changes in the horse’s exact position. For instance, slight alterations in the legs and head positions portray very different feelings that impact the viewer. These changes convey nuances in emotion that we perhaps don’t even have words for, but the impact is communicated very accurately by the pose. In this way I am using the leaping horse almost as an abstract canvas to communicate very specific human emotional states. The varying positions of the series of leaping horses remind me of the changing states of cumulus clouds in the sky, which can appear solid and dense in their forms, but which morph into something completely different within your range of vision.

Leaping Horse XXV is made of painted resin and mounted on a beautiful oak base. It is initialled on the inside of its left hind leg, and comes with a signed letter of authentication. It is just the right size to sit on your desk, shelves or mantlepiece and look as if it is running across its own landscape there. Although delicately modelled, the object itself is much more robust than you might imagine, and can stand up to a few knocks in its daily life. There are just two casts in this very limited edition.
