Peace and Calm
Canvas painting, wire on back, not framed.
Peace and Calm explores the quiet sanctuary found in stillness, companionship, and self-containment. The seated figure folds inward, cradling a cat against her body, creating a protective, intimate circle. Her posture suggests withdrawal from external noise, yet not isolation—rather, a chosen retreat into safety and tenderness.
The exaggerated hands and feet emphasise touch and grounding. Hands rest gently but deliberately, symbolising care, reassurance, and the human need to hold and be held. The cat, alert yet relaxed, mirrors this emotional balance—watchful, present, and trusting. Together, figure and animal form a quiet alliance, a shared calm that feels instinctive and deeply familiar.
A restrained palette of soft blues, muted greys, and deep blueish black reinforces the painting’s emotional tone. The blue clothing conveys serenity and introspection, while the dark background removes distractions, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the emotional exchange. Subtle outlines and simplified forms lend the work a timeless, almost folk-art quality, enhancing its sense of emotional honesty.
Influence & Style
The work draws influence from naïve and modern figurative traditions, where emotional truth takes precedence over realism. There are echoes of early modernists and contemporary illustrative painting—flattened space, expressive line, and symbolic proportion—used here to communicate inner life rather than physical accuracy. The painting invites slow looking and quiet reflection, offering the viewer a moment of pause in an otherwise restless world.
Peace and Calm is a meditation on comfort, companionship, and the restorative power of still moments—those small, private spaces where the world softens and everything feels briefly held.
