Original artwork description
The painting has a contemplative atmosphere. The colours of the stained glass enhance the mysterious atmosphere. In the Middle Ages, the stained-glass window became a symbol of the glorification of the body and the earth. The stained glass is rendered in gold paint. It connects the natural with the supernatural order.
This work is inspired by the work of Parmigianino. He lived around 1530, but produced (very unusually for the time) highly individualistic portraits of women. Some of his works leaned towards Mannerism, such as the Madonna with the Long Neck. Classical with a twist.
An ode to the courage of doubt!
Contemplation. Reflection – is that a weakness or a strength? Living hesitantly, feeling one’s way in the dark. Who dares to do that anymore? Forcing yourself to think things through first, to listen first, to weigh up the pros and cons, to sleep on it, to see things through someone else’s eyes. Living with a wavering heart. Those who can doubt are open to other perspectives, can live alongside those who think differently without fear of losing their own identity. When we broaden our understanding of the world and of our fellow human beings, we can broaden our understanding of the world. Under the weight of certainty, all colour fades and the world becomes black and white; even the shades of grey disappear. A debate degenerates into a conversation between deaf people. Contemplation bites the dust.
✓ The courage of doubt: an appreciation of doubt and a rejection of false certainties.
✓ Courage of doubt: daring to commit to a future of diversity.
