Original artwork description
In Kyoto, Japan, the Sanjusangendo temple houses a collection of over 1,000 statues surrounding the statue of the deity Kannon and his 28 guardians with crystal eyes. The guardian statues each have distinct and striking expressions. I drew and then cut these faces into pieces of varying sizes. I then recomposed them into new faces by adjusting these pieces, with the sole aim of achieving harmony in form and color. Symmetry is lost, and the viewer's eye, disoriented and intrigued, scans the image in every direction in a futile attempt to find the natural conformity of a face.
