Original artwork description
A young man is walking , not too steadily , on a tightrope. The rope extends into an area with thick fog. Once in it , he will not be able to orient and balance with his eyesight. It will be a precarious situation.
I photographed a young man at a beach who had tied his rope between two trees, just a foot above the sand. He was teaching himself to walk the tightrope, and kept falling off after a few steps. But he would just put his foot down , and then got right back on the rope repeatedly. There was no fog , visibility was excellent.
But putting him in the painting's environment , I thought, was a metaphor for life. It's always a little precarious, (or not so little), and we never know what's ahead of us.
And I suppose there might be other interpretations.
