Artwork description
In and Out of Time is an atmospheric landscape inspired by a rainy late summer day at the far end of the remote Waternish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye. Looking across the waters towards Dunvegan, the landscape dissolves into soft layers of mist, light, and memory, creating a dreamlike scene suspended between reality and imagination.
The title reflects the way memories soften with time. Like a landscape seen through falling rain, sharp edges fade, colours merge, and past experiences become gentler. Joy and sadness sit side by side, transformed into something quieter and more peaceful.
This remote corner of Skye is reached by winding single-track roads that pass scattered croft houses before disappearing into open moorland and sea. Nearby lies an ancient churchyard, where generations of island families have rested for centuries. On the day this image was created, soft rain drifted across the water and the only sound was birdsong carried on the breeze.
Created using intentional camera movement and long exposure techniques, the work reduces mountain, water, and sky to flowing layers of blue, teal, grey, and soft green. The result is a calming, painterly landscape that evokes stillness, reflection, and emotional wellbeing.
Printed by hand in my Isle of Skye studio using archival inks and museum-quality Canson canvas, each piece is produced with exceptional attention to colour, detail, and longevity. Available in bespoke sizes and on fine art paper by request.
