The sea comes in,
the sea goes out,

comes in,
goes out,

draws us in,
draws away.

It mounts its assault, then falls back,
leaving us, in its wake,
its briny scent.

Once more it raises its voice,
with drums beating,
before beating a retreat with a mutter,
abandoning on the sand
bewildered shells.

Such is the fervent rhythm of the water,
haunting, enchanting,

under the spell of the Moon,
conductor of the oceans.
