Hide and Seek (2024) by Zakhar Shevchuk is a rare example of a small painting carrying the presence of a monumental statement. This 29x24 cm oil on canvas uses heavily textured impasto to form a column of five indistinct childlike figures, each placed in a pale-blue frame reminiscent of a bathtub.

The image reflects a wartime adaptation witnessed in Ukraine: during missile alerts, many households without shelters relied on bathtubs for protection. Shevchuk transforms this stark reality into a symbolic composition where repetition mirrors both routine and endurance. The title, Hide and Seek, plays with this duality, where innocence and fear meet in the same space.
