Original artwork description:

Hartland point to Lundy Island
A special holiday,
On the Heritage coast of North Devon,
The walk through Speke’s mill sea meadow,
Feeling the warm strong breeze and sunshine,
A magical and fertile landscape, before the sea,
Looking across I see the misty island and the waterfall ledge,
The rugged cliffs like small sand and mud pyramids,
A place by the sea that has so much ancient history and mystic.

Words and experience of being here recently in late May 2025.
Original impressionist watercolour on acid free textured Fabriano watercolour paper 300gsm 140lb. I crested this watercolour after my experience of being there, back at Coppingers smugglers cottage on Galsham farm, Hartland.
I used wet on wet sporadic washes for the sky leaving areas of white paper as I never use white paint. I then used a scrubbing technique with my Chinese brush for the clouds. I then created my horizon line for the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean using my small filbert brush. I shaped the cliffs with my filbert brush gradually building in the mark making by dabbing, blending and pressing the build up of paint. I painted the island when the paper was slightly damp to give an atmospheric effect with a sable hair brush.
I absolutely have fallen in love with this area and it is said to be the most dramatic coastline of the British isles. The wild flora at Speke’s mill sea meadow was so special for nature.

Materials used:

Textured watercolour paper Fabriano acid free 300gsm 140lb, Windsor and newton watercolours, filbert brush, Chinese brush, sable hair brush, fan brush,
