" The medicine stone is the great oracle of the Mandans, and whatever it announces is believed with implicit confidence. Every spring, and on some occasion's during the summer, a deputstion visits the sacred spot where there is a thick porous stone 20' in circumference, with a smooth surface. Having reached the place the ceremony of smoking to it is performed by the deputies."

So many times sacred places are misunderstood. Disregarded. Defiled. Simply because we do not understand or are unwilling to learn the importance they hold. Today Medicine rock is surrounded in a chain link fence. You are no longer able to place prayer bundles or sage on its face. Simply because some could not respect. This piece is in remembrance of when it was un-fenced and still pristine.
