Golden Withering (2026) Original Oil Painting by Lilith Gurekhian

This painting began with a question that has followed me for a long time:
Is withering truly the opposite of life, or is it simply its most honest continuation?
The figure at the center is at once a flower, a human being, and a memory. Her face is only partially visible, as though she has already crossed halfway into another state of existence. She is not dying, yet she is no longer trying to bloom. She stands between those two conditions—on that rare threshold where loss begins to resemble wisdom.
To me, this figure resembles someone who has waited too long for something—a love, a miracle, an answer, a return. She has waited so long that the waiting itself has grown roots, branches, and a life of its own.
Perhaps that is why the work is called Golden Withering.
Because some losses take nothing away.
They simply remove, little by little, everything unnecessary, until only what was always there remains.
