Original artwork description
Major General A.P. Ermolov's counterattack on Raevsky's battery. Battle of Borodino. A.P. Ermolovs counterattack on the Raevsky Battery (Kurgan Height) became a turning point in the Battle of Borodino. Seeing the key position captured by the French around 11:00, Ermolov, on his own initiative, commanded the 3rd Battalion of the Ufimskiy Infantry Regiment together with General A.I. Kutaisov. Having repelled the enemy, he recaptured the battery, receiving a wound.
This artwork is a dynamic portrayal of a historical battle scene, capturing the intensity and chaos of combat with striking precision. The central figure, a commanding Major General A.P. Ermolovs on horseback, charges forward with a sword raised high, leading his troops into the fray. The monochromatic palette emphasizes the drama and urgency, drawing attention to the intricate details of the soldiers’ uniforms and the tumultuous landscape. Scattered cannons and fallen debris in the foreground heighten the sense of disorder, while the background depicts a sprawling battlefield filled with advancing ranks. The artists skillful use of contrast and motion captures the essence of leadership and valor amidst adversity, making this piece not only a vivid representation of historical conflict but also a tribute to the courage and determination of those who fight. The sturdy frame and precise matting enhance its timeless and authoritative presence, making it a compelling focal point in any collection.
