The painting invites immersion in the colourful elegance of nature. The emphasis lies in the tensions between the red fruited rowan in the foreground, covered in snow, the white birches in the middle ground, and the pale mauve colour of the sky. Through this scenery, a creek is running. The effect of this play between different planes, colours, and textures in the painting emphasises its layerdness. For a painter these layers and textures can only become visible by means of close observation, and looking ‘beyond’ the elements in nature, a process embodied in the paintings in which every brushstroke forms a meaningful entity in the emerging whole.
