Inspired by the self-portraits of Frank Auerbach. As a lifelong admirer of Frank Auerbach's work, studying since I was a very young person, around 12, I have been deeply fascinated by his work and the ways in which he painted his works.
His practices inspired my working practices, whereby, like his work, I build up layers of paint, images and colours, before knocking them back through rubbing, erasing, stripping and sanding back - scrapping back to earlier layers, allowing the past to influence the present.
This gelli print monotype explores Frank Auerbachs portraits, allowing me to explore his line techniques, whilst paying homage to this artist who no so long ago passed.
These techniques act as allegory exploring the way in which the past continues to influence the present and future.
