The origin of the word ‘Finland’ is uncertain but it doesn’t matter to the Finns anyway because they call their country ‘Suomi’. And there is more to Suomi than its superabundance of saunas, lakes (169000), islands (179000), and happiness (voted happiest country in 2024). For instance, did you know that the terrain was shaped by glaciers, and, now released from the enormous weight of ice, the countryside is rising due to ‘post glacial rebound’ - the surface area is positively bouncing back at the rate of 7 square kms a year. Another curiosity is that October 13th is National Failure Day on which Finns aim to learn from their mistakes. The Finns can also take pride in being the worlds greatest coffee drinkers and their unusual but highly enlightened policy of levying traffic fines as a percentage of your earnings. So, the question is, why didn’t I call this painting ‘Suomi’ instead of Finland? I didn’t know either! Duh!
