Zakhar Shevchuk’s Family Portrait (2020) is a 74x94 cm oil that belongs to the Old Photographs series. The artist turns imperfections of old snapshots – blur, scratches, faded tones – into poetic devices. In this way, the painting explores how memory operates through suggestion rather than precise detail.
The scene moves left to right: a grandmother with a child, a bigger child in the foreground, a mother embracing her son, and a father turned toward them. Faces remain indistinct, but gestures of care, embrace, and orientation reveal the bonds of kinship.
