Falling Echoes (2024) Original Acrylic Painting by Kathleen Rietz

This painting was inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the water irises I spot naturally thriving around ponds and lakes in the prairie near my Midwestern home. I titled this painting “Falling Echoes” because I find it easy to get lost in the sounds of nature, falling and echoing on the surface of the water as these tall irises sway gracefully in the wind. This painting is an abstracted depiction of this beautiful sight, pulled from my memory and imagination.

I started this painting as an abstract work using layers of acrylic ink and paint. The I saw iris shapes emerging and decided to trace the floral shapes with pastel drawing, allowing some of the images to merge into the background, symbolizing the fleeting season of the irises and their elegant, lacy petals.

The main colors are deep browns, muted violet, pink, shades of lush green and purple.
