Ein-Stein, 2023

In this painting I explore the strange weight of thought and the fragile place where reason and imagination meet. A solitary figure sits calmly, dressed in a vivid blue suit against a radiant mustard yellow background. His posture is composed, almost meditative. Yet where the human head should be, I have placed a block of stone, solid, rough, and immovable. Resting gently upon it is a white dove.

The title Ein-Stein plays with language. In German, ein Stein literally means “a stone,” while also echoing the name Einstein. I was interested in this ambiguity: the image of a mind that has become stone-like, rigid, stubborn, and immovable, as if thought itself had hardened into matter.

The dove introduces a striking contrast. Its softness, warmth, and quiet presence rest upon the cold, coarse hardness of the stone. In this tension I explore a question that feels deeply contemporary: the closed, cold thinking of individuals, or of those in positions of power, set against the gentle persistence of nature and life itself.

This is a painting that invites contemplation and quietness, a moment of pause in a world that often feels fast, restless, and volatile. Between rigidity and tenderness, between silence and possibility, the image encourages the viewer to slow down and reflect on the fragile balance between reason, power, and the quiet forces that remind us of our humanity.
