"Echo of Deco" Copper Wall Relief (2025) Original Relief by Jeremy Maronpot

60.96 x 60.96 x 3.81cm

This modern, dimensional wall sculpture has overlapping natural forms in an abstract open-ended design that invites viewer interpretation. The dramatic contrast of the deep brown and black patina accentuates the physical depth, and the warm copper tone works well in spaces with natural materials like wood and stone.

MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION

This artwork is sculpted in copper using manual metal forming techniques. The surface was forged gradually into shape from a flat sheet using handheld hammers, punches and pneumatic tools. The depth was driven directly into the metal by thousands of hammer blows, rather than created by adding or removing material. These hammer marks are visible across the entire surface, creating a rich texture that shows tool paths and the story of the sculpture's construction. The raised relief is about 1/4 inch deep.

A side wall was welded to the face, creating a hollow metal shell roughly as thick as a coin. Inside the metal shell is a wooden backing board and frame that provides added structure and an anchor point for the hanging hardware.

This sculpture is for indoor display only, as the wood components are not suitable for outdoor conditions or moisture.

FINISH AND PATINA

Raised shapes with warm copper tones sit against darker recessed areas, creating dramatic color variation that enhances the physical depth of the piece. The deep brown patina was developed through a natural oxidation process accelerated using salts, acids and chemicals. This patina is chemically bonded to the metal and will continue to slowly evolve naturally over time. The sculpture is sealed with Renaissance Wax—a museum-grade wax originally developed by the British Museum for preservation. Unlike synthetic clear coats, the wax does not yellow, crack or permanently alter the copper. Reapplying the wax every few years can help preserve the finish and restore luster.

DIMENSIONS AND HANGING

This wall-mounted metal artwork has a 24 inch diameter and a 1 ⅜ inch total depth from the wall. The piece weighs 14 pounds and hangs flush against the wall using a French cleat style hanger.

About
My drive to create stems from a fascination with the dual nature of metal: its apparent permanence and its surprising fluidity. I consider myself a metalsmith rather than a metalworker... Read more
