Early Evening sunset at the Shard Original Oil Painting by Joseph Charman

A richly textured, soft and gentle oil painting which I created using a painting process often employed by the “Old Masters”. The process involves firstly completing an under-painting using only burnt umber (brown), to ensure a strong tonal foundation on which to overlay the remaining colours. I love to paint the colour layer while the brown under- painting is still wet. This subdues the overlaid colours and gives rise to a deep, timeless and profound atmosphere, reminiscent of the older style paintings. I then give things a contemporary twist which fills the artwork with numerous complimentary qualities.
