This painting was made on site near Dumfries, using reeds and pieces of grass as the painting tools rather than a brush. The marks were made by the landscape itself, in a sense. The layered, dappled surface of reds, golds, and greens came directly from the unpredictability of those natural tools: the way a reed holds and releases paint is nothing like a brush, and the result is something I couldn't have planned or repeated. What the painting tries to capture is the density and restless colour of a field in spring, where the eye can't find a single point to settle. Whether it succeeds is partly down to the materials deciding what they wanted to do. Painted on a visit to the Dumfries area, en plein air. Commissions of similar subjects available on request.
