This painting is the smaller of the two versions of Rochefort's Escape. Manet painted it six years after the incident and painted an actual situation in his time. Not an ancient situation like artists were common to do at that time. So it was revolutionary. No heroic pictures, but just like the penible situation really was: a tiny dinghy bobbing through the waves. Is there a ship looming on the horizon to pick up the fugitives? The waves, the small boat, the huge blue sea and the boat at the dark brownish coloured horizon. Drama is around the corner. An overseas refugee route, is still necessary and going on in 2026. Everyday thousands of people are on the run nowadays. It seems to be of all times.

The painting is in harsh, flicked strokes to emphasize the phosphorescent sea all over the canvas.
