Dark and Stormy (2023)Oil painting
by Nicole Tudor-Williams

£1,600

Original artwork description

This striking original oil painting captures a dramatic moment of transition—a sailboat emerging into sunlight through a break in turbulent storm clouds. Measuring 100x50cm on deep-sided canvas, the composition balances atmospheric tension with quiet optimism. Rich layers of deep blues, purples, and dark blue-greens form a moody seascape, while golden sandy beach tones glow where light pierces the clouds above. Distant mountains loom dark and imposing, yet the luminous white vessel suggests escape and renewal—a vessel moving forward toward calmer horizons. This is a powerful study in contrast, where nature's raw drama yields to hope and forward momentum. A commanding piece for collectors drawn to seascapes with emotional depth and masterful colour work.
This work was inspired by a view when I was on holiday in Messini, Greece. A storm had just passed through and I was struck by the light shining through the retreating clouds and highlighting the single sailboat out on the water braving the elements. I did a small watercolour sketch to capture the moment then transferred that to canvas when I was back in my studio.

Materials used:

Oil paint on Stretched Cotton Canvas.
