This south Wales landscape - close to the artist's home - has been shaped by two great forces: the first was the retreating glaciers which carved the dramatic craig in the distance; the second was the age of coal, when this scene would have been blackened with the detritus of mining, and the topography still hides the flattened remains of spoil heaps.
