Equestrian portrait
Conde Duque de Olivares, after Velazquez (study)
Inspired by Velázquez’s Equestrian Portrait of the Count-Duke of Olivares, this piece reimagines the Baroque grandeur through a contemporary, expressive lens. I was drawn to the powerful stance of the horse and the dramatic composition, and chose to reinterpret it with loose, gestural lines and energetic washes of color.
The work plays with abstraction, allowing form and movement to merge fluidly. Rather than focusing on precise detail, I aimed to capture the momentum and spirit of the scene — a fleeting impression that speaks to both historical resonance and present-day expression.
