Summertime in Tyrol, Austria. Here, the Sellrain Valley – one of the less well known valleys but one which I find especially charming. This valley has dedicated itself to sustainable tourism and you can find numerous so-called “Mountaineer Villages” here – a title given to those places that place particular importance on nature conservation. One of these villages is Sellrain with its church St Quirin. Its typical Tyrolean steeple, which you can see in the top left of the painting, reaches up to the sky to which it is so close. Due to its seemingly precarious position, this church has been referred to “church on the edge of the abyss”. Behind St Quirin, the clouds are lifting like a curtain rising on the north chain of the Karwendel alps – die Nordkette.

Materials used:

High quality watercolour paper & Windsor and Newton paints
