In this painting, I wanted to capture a quiet yet deeply human moment of the American West. The cowboy bending to lift his dog represents strength intertwined with tenderness. I positioned the sunset as an emotional backdrop, allowing the sky to radiate behind the figures and create a dramatic backlit silhouette.
The vertical composition anchors the rider and horse as the central pillar of the image, while the vast golden prairie expands the sense of space. I applied thicker paint to model the volume and solidity of the horse, while using freer, more fluid strokes in the sky and grass to convey shifting light.
