Buttermere Valley: A Lake District Landscape (2026) Original Oil Painting by Chris Marshall

I love the Lake District, but I love Buttermere the most! It combines tranquil beauty with fine mountain scenery in a way I don't think is quite matched anywhere else in the District. This is the view of the Buttermere Valley from Rannerdale Knotts, a small but delightful ridge which sits alongside Crummock Water (the nearer lake) just north of Buttermere Village. Although I found the whole view enticing, it was the way the light was playing on the distant hills that finally drew me to paint it.
