This original painting captures the quiet beauty of a birch wood near my home in the Peak District, bathed in sunlight and carpeted with bluebells. Evocative of fresh breezes and quiet nostalgia, it invites the viewer into a timeless, peaceful moment, forest bathing for the soul. The dappled light, shifting across the woodland floor, and the subtle movement of trees in the breeze create a sense of calm and serenity. Expressive and atmospheric, the work evokes both the stillness and the gentle energy of spring in the woods.
Created using acrylic paints on a deep-edged canvas, this one-of-a-kind artwork began with time spent in the landscape, observing, taking notes, and photographing the scene. In the studio, I work intuitively, starting with brush-applied base layers and building texture and depth through impasto techniques with a palette knife. The painting draws on optical colour mixing techniques inspired by the Impressionists, alongside traditional methods such as scumbling and glazing, used by the old masters. I paint until the piece reaches a natural conclusion.
The result is a contemporary painting that sits somewhere between abstraction and realism. The image continues around the edges of the canvas, so no frame is necessary, it’s ready to hang and bring a sense of tranquillity and beauty to any space.
