Blue Sea Silhouettes (2025) Original Oil Painting by Tetiana Surshko

A wide stretch of deep blue water with a band of pale gold light along the horizon, and scattered across the shallows a dozen small dark figures — people standing in the sea, alone or in pairs, most of them turned away. They are painted as silhouettes only, a few centimetres tall, with no faces and no detail, so what you read is not who they are but how they are standing: still, unhurried, looking out.

The whole painting is built on that contrast. The water is worked with a palette knife in broad horizontal strokes, white foam dropped on wet in single loaded movements, so the surface is physically rough and catches raking light. The figures, by contrast, are tiny and precise. Scale does the work: the sea takes up almost the entire canvas and the people are barely there, which is exactly what standing in the Atlantic feels like.

Oil on stretched canvas, 80 x 60 cm, painted in 2025. Signed on the front, varnished, sides painted, sold unframed and ready to hang straight out of the box. It belongs to my Endless Water series — paintings about water that never settles.
