With their beautiful blue crest these North American jays are immediately recognisable.

Like their European cousins they subsist on a diet of nuts, seeds, acorns and insects and possess the same high intelligence of other birds in the Corvidae family.

I had a brilliant time painting and drawing away at this avian portrait, building layers of texture switching between acrylic and pencil. The final touches in ink were perfect to solidify the details of that clever face.

A4 acrylic, ink and pencil on 280gsm acid free paper.
