Original artwork description
The peony is my favorite summer flower and I paint them as much as I can while they bloom. It is a challenge to paint them from life as the flower changes right in front of my eyes. A challenge that I immensely enjoy.
This large painting was painted from life in my garden on a summer evening. I set up a bunch of peonies under natural light, where my focus was to bring out the layered structure of these flowers. So I went with a rather simplified and muted background that would highlight the flowers and the subtle pinks in them.
The painting features rich and bold brushwork, expressively painted with artist quality oil paints.
