Backstreet Sunlight in Kawaramachi, Kyoto (2025) Original Watercolour by Masato Watanabe

In this piece, I wanted to capture the quiet atmosphere of a narrow backstreet in Kawaramachi, Kyoto.
What drew my attention was the way the soft sunlight hits the wet stone pavement and the intricate web of overhead power lines. By layering transparent watercolor washes, I focused on rendering the subtle contrast between the deep, dark shadows of the buildings and the bright reflections on the ground. It is a scene of everyday life in Kyoto, where old traditions and modern city living quietly overlap.
