This painting belongs to the first period of my journey from illustration to painting. It depicts an unlikely young boy absorbed in contemplating the nakedness of a nymph, which a terracotta copy of an ancient sculpture offers to his gaze: perhaps it evokes the same uneasiness that always afflicts those who, lost in the woods, encounter a nymph. That powerful female life force has here become a slightly chipped terracotta statue, exerting its inexhaustible seduction between the tool shed and the goldfish pond in Aunt Adelina's garden.
