Atlantic Sensation is a dramatic aerial seascape photographed from the cliffs beside Kilt Rock on the Isle of Skye. Far below, Atlantic waves crash against the foot of the famous waterfall, turning the intensely aquamarine water into an intricate lacework of white foam and flying spray.

I made this photograph from around 200 feet above the sea, looking almost vertically down from the clifftop as wave after wave swept into the rocky shoreline. From this height, the familiar forms of the ocean disappear. There is almost no horizon and little sense of scale; instead, the sea becomes an abstract composition of turquoise, deep teal, emerald and white.

What fascinated me was the contrast between the tremendous power of the Atlantic and the delicacy of the patterns it created. White foam traces fleeting lines across the surface, curling and dissolving before being replaced by the next incoming wave. Against the extraordinary mineral colour of the water, these momentary patterns resemble lace, marbling or marks made with a fine brush.

There is something exhilarating about standing high above this stretch of Skye's coastline, hearing the sea below and watching the waterfall tumble directly from the cliffs towards the ocean. Atlantic Sensation grew from that feeling: wild, fresh and full of movement, yet strangely beautiful when seen from above.

This artwork has particular presence at a very large scale. Its strong vertical composition makes it ideal for tall walls, double-height living spaces, mezzanines, dining rooms and open-plan interiors where a smaller artwork can easily become lost. Although the aquamarine colour is intense, the limited palette of teal and white allows the work to sit surprisingly comfortably within neutral and contemporary interiors.
