It's my first completed work of 2024! Continuing my bird book, this clown of the sea and cliff has patiently waited its turn on the easel.

These little auks are part of the genus Fratercula, from the latin fraterculus, meaning 'little brother' in reference to the puffin's robe like plumage.

I've always found something slightly melancholy about the puffin's gaze, perhaps it's a subconscious association with the sadness of clowns. Whether tortured comedians or not, they are certainly charming little birds.

Acrylic and pen on 250gsm paper.

Materials used:

Acrylic, ink and pencil on paper
