About Bert Bruins

Biography

Always keen on drawing, I was given a set of oil paints at the age of 13 and have experimented with many styles and media since. Having given Art College a miss, tempting though it was, I studied politics and social sciences instead, before love "forced" me to move to England after a period of travel in Europe and Asia.

Having lived in Devon for 30 years, I paint the English landscape that I love, and I attempt to show the intense beauty of nature, our countryside and townscapes.  Inspired by art schools such as the Scottish colourists (Peploe, Cadell, Hunter) and the “railway poster” artists such as Richmond and Wilkinson, I work alternately in oil, ink, watercolour, acrylic, pencil and pastels. I also have a passion for serial abstracts, where I experiment with colour and shape for its own sake, the pure pleasure of off-setting colour and shape. Riley, Vasarely and Escher are influences for these.  And who knows, at some point in the future I may find time for more lino-printing and other print forms....

I sell my work through various galleries in Devon, stage exhibitions, sell worldwide and have shown and sold work in the UK, the Netherlands and the US. I am an active committee member of several art societies.
