Original artwork description
“Amazing Grace” is a hymn, which has been and remains beloved by Christians since it was composed in 1772. Its lasting popularity is based, not just on an appreciation of its melody, or even its heart-felt and humble lyrics—which so many of us relate to--which speak of the power of God’s miraculous grace to transform the lives of repentant sinners & grant salvation to those who believe that Jesus paid our debt by offering His own infinitely precious life, in our place, on the Cross. The truth of this transformation is evident in the life of the man who wrote this hymn, John Newton, who was a slave trader, before his conversion to Christianity. Like Newton, no one is beyond the reach of God’s love. He was converted, rejected his former lifestyle & was ordained to the Church of England, where he wrote this hymn for his congregation. He became an abolitionist, as did many Christians, who supported the pivotal work of William Wilberforce, whose crowning achievement was the passage in Parliament of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act in 1807. A collage of information, names, dates and even sheet music was created & painted in watercolor, which was then mounted on canvas & overpainted in oils as the basis for this dramatic painting, which is meant to be a testament to the transformation that the glorious & amazing grace of Jesus makes possible in our lives. A satin varnish has been applied for protection & hanging hardware is already installed.
