A.M. Foster Bridge in Autumn
Francois de Melogue
2024 | Archival pigment print on professional luster fine art paper, 260gsm. | 43 x 29
The A.M. Foster Bridge stands at the edge of a Vermont meadow while the sky goes peach and gray along the horizon. Its weathered timber has taken on the blue-gray of old barn wood, the planks and peaked roof worn smooth by decades of hard winters. A split-rail fence runs along either side of the gravel approach, the posts listing slightly, the rails gone silver. Above the entrance a plain sign reads the years 1856 and 1914. Beyond the opening, the hillside is on fire. Sugar maples hold their scarlet and orange against the pale early sky, the colors so saturated they seem to generate their own light, while the distant mountains sit blue and indifferent along the ridge.
The meadow grasses have gone rust and gold at the edges of the path. The air at this hour still carries the cold that settled overnight and has not yet burned off, the kind that makes the colors look sharper and the sky more provisional. The bridge does not span water. It stands in open ground, framing nothing but the morning and the trees behind it, which turns out to be enough. The fences draw you forward. The opening holds what is there to be seen.
