In this painting, I wanted to capture a quiet yet deeply human moment of the American West. The cowboy bending to lift his dog represents strength intertwined with tenderness. I positioned the sunset as an emotional backdrop, allowing the sky to radiate behind the figures and create a dramatic backlit silhouette.

The vertical composition anchors the rider and horse as the central pillar of the image, while the vast golden prairie expands the sense of space. I applied thicker paint to model the volume and solidity of the horse, while using freer, more fluid strokes in the sky and grass to convey shifting light. Subtle splattered highlights suggest movement in the air, adding vitality and a sense of lived time to the scene.
