One of the most memorable trips I have ever made was to South Africa. While in the city of Cape Town I was surprised at how European it was so I set off to a small township to seek out a more African experience. I was not disappointed and subsequently did the same thing in Johannesburg. These places were hubs of creativity and activity. Although poor the communities seemed to thrive and as I turned every street corner there was yet another scene of playing children and vibrant colour to stimulate my painter’s eye. My trip was far too short to be able to develop any kind of real knowledge of the places I visited but it was enough to enable me to come home and make a whole series of work.
