A long snow-capped mountain range runs the full width of this panoramic expressionist landscape, its black and white peaks cut with a palette knife under a soft sky of lilac, pink and blue. The horizontal format does the work here: the eye travels along the ridge from summit to summit, then lifts into the clouds, and the whole scene settles into quiet.
Above The Silence is part of my Mountain Soul series, where mountains carry the mood of a painting. Two worlds share one canvas, the hard, cold, almost monochrome rock below and the gentle pastel air above it. The title describes the feeling of standing high enough that the noise of everything else simply drops away.
The canvas is 80 x 40 cm (about 31.5 x 15.7 inches), a wide landscape format that fits naturally above a sofa, a bed, a sideboard or a desk, and works especially well in calm interiors with grey, white, black or dusty pink tones. It reads clearly from a distance yet rewards a closer look at the texture.
It is painted in oil on stretched cotton canvas. The mountains are built entirely with a palette knife in thick impasto, so light catches the ridges of paint and the snow seems to sit on the rock.
