I wanted A Breath of Fresh Air to feel serene and peaceful, evoking those happy days at the coast when you can truly breathe in the vastness of the landscape. I’ve always loved the sensation of approaching a beach: walking through dunes and experiencing the delightful surprise of seeing the bay suddenly open up before you. You know it’s there; you can hear it and smell it on the wind, yet it still feels like a revelation.

A monotype is a one-off hand-made print, just as unique as a painting. I used rollers and dabbers to spread out ink on a smooth plastic board then made marks with a cloth and other tools. The ink was transferred to the paper using a hand-operated printing press. I built up layers of over-lapping colours by printing several times.

The paper is 56 x 55.5 cm and it’s printed edge-to-edge, with no margin, to maximise the image area. A double mount and frame will set it off beautifully. It can be also be flat mounted so the image edges are revealed. Supplied unmounted/unframed, rolled in a wide, strong tube. (Framed images are shown for scale and context only - frame not included.)

Materials used:

Oil-based artist quality ink on Rives BFK cotton rag paper
