Two figures lean into each other until their noses meet in a tangle of lips and fingers - their arms rising above them in a great arch of roses, ribbons and intertwined sleeves. In the centre of that arch, suspended on a thread, a small bird hangs upside down, watching the whole scene with quiet bewilderment.
The kiss is the structure of this painting. Everything curves toward it and away from it at the same time - the arms, the roses, the feathers, the ribbons. It is tender and absurd in equal measure, like all the best kisses.
I have painted this moment many times, in many ways. But this one feels the most complete - because it is not just two people kissing. It is two entire worlds colliding, decorated, witnessed by a bird who did not ask to be there but somehow makes the whole thing true.
