Biography
Since 2014, Willem Steegmans has been creating original abstract paintings that explore the relationship between colour, texture, movement and emotion. Guided by intuition rather than predetermined rules, each composition develops organically throughout the creative process, resulting in works that are both expressive and deeply personal.
Inspired by everyday experiences, human emotions and the beauty of imperfection, Willem creates layered artworks that invite curiosity and reflection. Through rich textures, bold contrasts and dynamic compositions, his paintings offer an open visual experience in which every viewer can discover their own meaning.
The paintings of Willem Steegmans reflect an ever-evolving relationship with the surrounding world and the emotions it evokes. Elements emerge, disappear and reveal themselves over time, encouraging the viewer to slow down and look again. What is visible at first glance may transform as colours, forms and structures gradually unfold.
Each painting is a one-of-a-kind original and can be viewed from four different orientations, offering multiple perspectives within a single artwork. There is no fixed way to experience a Steegmans painting; every orientation creates a new balance, atmosphere and interpretation. In this way, the artwork evolves alongside its surroundings and the person viewing it.
More than simply occupying a wall, a Steegmans painting becomes part of the space around it. Light, distance and environment continuously influence the viewing experience. Morning sunlight may reveal subtle details hidden the day before, while softer evening light creates entirely different moods and impressions. Move the painting to another room and the atmosphere changes once again.
Willem believes that art should continue to inspire long after it is acquired. His paintings are designed to remain a source of discovery, allowing new details, emotions and interpretations to emerge over time. Each encounter offers an opportunity to see something different, creating a lasting and evolving relationship between artwork, space and viewer.
Every painting is signed with the initials WIRE, either on the side or on the back.
