  • Biography
Hello, my name is Stanislav Lazarov and I am an artist by education, profession and vocation.
In the last ten years I have been mostly creating oil paintings, playing with
and developing classical painting techniques; experimenting with them. For
me experimenting in coloristics and looking for new narrative fields which I
can further develop are both challenges. A main topic of my work is the
artistic research of the world and the people of the dynamic and culturally
eclectic Balkans – a provocative territory where changes, geographical,
social and spiritual are inevitable. Sometimes I go back in time and look for
treasured, patriarchal coziness in time’s cordiality and warmth, in the
romance of years passed, in the old faltering houses quivering in
anticipation of their landlords. At times I paint the sea which provokes our
senses with the concept of infinity and promises us romance,
boundlessness and eternity. Yet sometimes I take a look at people’s
dwellings: painting churches, towns and streets with their urban hectic life,
the vertical and horizontal dimensions of human existence. Yet at other
times feeling tired of the Balkan lack of fulfillment, I take a peek in the
artist’s room, resting in that unkempt and chaotic world, glad to be a part of
    it.

I am the author of four individual exhibitions and I have also taken part in
numerous group projects. Here is what curators say about my work:
“Lazarov paints not mere feelings but ideas; not simply experience but the
potential for experience. His art is born where imagination and intuition
meet. A feature of his art world is the repeated absence of a subject – the
figure of the person is simply not present. This absence of a subject is
however to a great extent subjectively constructed and in it the absence is
actually a sign of presence. The absent person is represented by their
belongings, reflections and manifestations: the painter’s brush, the flower
filled vase, the window of the lit house, the fisherman’s boat, the torpid old
house: all of them are substitutes for the human presence, forming various
existential realizations of an absently present subject. Existential modes
which are to be found in the author’s works are realized in several possible
life alternatives: returning to the times of authentic and archaic existence,
endless traveling in search of recognizing one’s own identity, art as an act of
creating and catharsis, a returning to one’s self by means of the imaginary
and the dreamt, submersion in the natural world or in the subconscious
abyss of our still and unstill sea.”
I am a member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists and I take part in both
national and international events organized by the Union.
Each of my paintings, each narrative field is an attempt to build a bridge –
between times and peoples, between the East and the West, between
dreams and reality. Each meeting with the observer is a promise to change
oneself and both the fictional and real world through the smile and beauty of
    the art.
