About Pauline H

  • Biography
I am Pauline. A born and raised Belgian self-taught, intuitive artist. I have painted for as long as I can remember.

I grew up being told I had to do something else for a living and that art should stay a hobby. This is how I ended up scoring 2 master degrees (one in communication and the second in management).

Refusing to settle for the status quo, I left Europe at 26 to live and work in Sydney, Australia. This is where I decided to join the local art school and started exhibiting my work in small art galleries, bars, and cafés (2011).

During that time, my work was still pretty dark and tortured. As I was struggling with eating disorders, my work was clearly a reflection of my issues with these illnesses and body image. I was working with mixed media on canvas, especially with collages, watercolors, and stencils (you can see some of these artworks on my website).

Over the years, as I grew up, healed myself, opened to spirituality, and got more mature, these changes totally got reflected in my art as well.

Today my work is colorful and spontaneous. I am still working with mixed media on canvas but my techniques have totally changed. I am working principally with fluid art, meaning I mix acrylic with some specific mediums to obtain a very fluid texture of paint that will slide onto the canvas. I then work with other techniques to obtain patterns and textures in the different phases of the creation and drying process.

For any type of format, I either work with colors that are softer to the eye (I call them Yin artworks) and usually apply paint on the entire canvas - or I work with more intense colors (I call them Yang artworks) and then work with negative space in order to make sure the piece is not too dense.

Both types speak to different types of people and / or different rooms. I like working with both depending on my moods and feelings.

Clearly, my main source of inspiration is spirituality and my own connection to something bigger - the universal energy of love and light - which I like to reflect in my work, as well as the perception of our reality, in this material world.

I like to vehicle a spiritual message through my artworks that will connect the observer with something bigger than him/herself. I like to mention Eckhart Tolle when thinking about my art. He says "all true artists, whether they know it or not, create from a place of no-mind, from inner stillness."

When I create, I become a channel for some greater energy to flow through, onto the canvas. Some will call it God, others Universe, Love or Light... it doesn't really matter.

My deepest hope is to communicate that back to the room that welcomes the artwork and to those looking at it.

I think I should finish by mentioning that I have won the first price at an emerging artists contest in Brussels, twice, in 2019 and in 2020 (and each time, both by the public and the jury). Since then, I ran two solo exhibition in Brussels in 2021. I have been a resident artist at Balthazar, Sablon, in 2021 and 2022, and I am now opening my own gallery in Portugal.
