Biography
A self-taught painter and mural artist, it is the pure joy of painting and expression that drives my process. Cumbria has some of the most spectacular landscapes in the UK, and I am constantly inspired by this subject matter. My work has been exhibited in Cumbria with Proseed, StArt, CCA and EVAN, while I have also worked with major charities and organisations such as Tullie Museum & Art Gallery, Prism Arts & Blank Wall Assassins. More widely I have won the Society of Scottish Artists Prize at the 'Big Art Show' 2024, been selected for the prestigious 2020 and 2023 Discerning Eye Exhibitions at the Mall Galleries London, long listed for the 2022 and 2023 Jacksons Painting Prize and exhibited at the 2024 Venice Biennale with the Proseed collective.
The main theme running through my landscapes is the exploration of paint and colour to capture the atmosphere of a place and time. My inspiration comes from the changing seasons or changing light, and my focus is on capturing a contemporary impression not an exact representation. I like my work to have immediacy and energy; spray paint drips and brush marks are often incorporated. The tools I use such as large brushes, spray paints and rollers allow for an expressive style. I also explore scale within my work and how my techniques can transfer with my largest painting being an 80 m2 ceiling mural, and my smallest pieces 20 cm x 20 cm.
Passionate about promoting art as being accessible to all ages and abilities through expressive painting, I have worked as a freelance artist on commissions & workshops with Prism Arts, Allerdale Council and Tullie Museum & Art Gallery amongst others. With a keen eye on sustainability, I use a carbon neutral print company, re-cycle & reuse studio materials, and have previously worked with the Carlisle based charity The Rebuild Site (who repurpose old building materials) to source project materials."
